5 Furnace Safety Tips

Furnace safety is of vital importance. You should always get your furnace checked when it has been inactive for a long period of time. It would require some maintenance before it starts to be active again. Regular upkeep ensures your furnace remains in good condition and lasts longer. With these furnace safety tips, you will be able to keep your home warm and comfortable for yourself and your family. You will not have to worry about an inefficient or unsafe furnace.

Here are 5 furnace safety tips for you to practice and look out for.

1. Schedule Inspections

Scheduling an inspection before the advent of winter is a must. Keep track of your yearly inspections to make sure your furnace is in good shape. The technician will determine if there are any operational issues. Inspections will also minimize the chances of future breakdowns. Having a professional to clean your furnace also makes it safe to use.

2. Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Levels

Replace the batteries of your fire alarm and your carbon monoxide alarm at least once a year. It's better to be safe than sorry, as accidents can happen at any time. Also, do a trial of both the devices, so you know you will be warned in case of a fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. You should place both the alarms in the same room as the furnace to an immediate warning. Also, place fire detectors on every floor of your house.

3. Replace Furnace Filters

Before you start actively using your furnace, make sure your filters are in good condition. Unchanged or damaged filters can cause a breakdown in your system. Dirty filters can also cause issues in your furnace. Replace your filters every one to two months. If you utilize the furnace a lot or smoke often, you might need to change the furnace more often.

4. Remove all Flammable Items

Keep flammable items away from your furnace. If you are using your furnace room for storage or laundry purposes as well, make sure the room remains organized. Keep items that might catch fire easily as far away as possible. Also, avoid keeping wet clothes on your furnace to dry, and do not hang any wet laundry from furnace equipment. Keep all cleaning solutions in airtight containers, including cat litter. Some areas to keep away from your furnace include sawdust, old rags, gasoline, plaint or paint thinners, and wooden scraps. Try and keep your furnace room as clear as possible for increased efficiency.

5. Vacuum

Try to vacuum inside your furnace to avoid dust and lint build-up. Try and do this monthly as accumulated dust can become a fire hazard. If you have a wall furnace, try cleaning it inside the burner compartment. Clean this area once a month so that lint does not build up. If you have a furnace that runs on natural gas, the flame should burn blue. If the flames are orange or yellow, it might require cleaning or adjustment.
