Wooden Drill Bits: Tips and Tools for Drilling Holes in Wood

power-drill-bits

Drilling holes in wood is more difficult then it looks and it can bring your do-it-yourself projects to a halt if you don't have the right tools or know-how to use them. The Wooden Drill Bits let you drill large holes or nice, strong screw joints with ease but you need to know how to properly use them. Using these drill bits with a drill require little skill and practice.

Twist drill bits for woods are used to drill pilot holes in wood before inserting nails or wood screws, to drill a hole for a bolt, and pinning boards together with wooden dowels are some examples of the importance of using a drill in doing woodworking or home repair projects.

Tip: Get a standard Wooden Drill Bits set. There are many twist drill bits that specifically designed for making holes in wood. This will help you through most projects. Know the size of your drill before buying a drill bit. You can buy individual bits or they come in sets of 50 Pc Drill Bits Set, 99 PCS Titanium Coated Twist Drill Bits or even higher pc set.

Tip: Use wooden drill bits with a centering tip. You can use a twist drill bit for normal holes with small to medium diameter. An auger bit is ideal for making deep holes with a diameter of 8-10 mm or more. The Forstner drill bit is recommended for drilling shallow holes of up to 30 mm diameter. The Hole Saw works great when drilling through-holes with 30 mm diameter or more.

Tip: Drilling pilot holes slightly smaller in diameter than the nail you plan to use can keep boards from cracking or splitting.

Tip: Creating a pilot hole slightly larger in diameter than the wood screw you want to use through the top board will make driving it in easier and avoid cracking the top board.

Tip: Always use wood screws. They have a high-incline thread and a pronounced tip.

Tip: You will see the best result by drilling along the grain of the wood. Set the right speed. If the speed is too low, the resulting hole will be jumbled. If the speed is too high, there is a risk of the workpiece overheating and burn marks occurring. Place wooden drill bits cleanly against the workpiece.

Tip: To join two pieces of wood with screws, always pre-drill a hole that is 0.5 to 1 mm larger
than the screw diameter in the piece where you want to insert the screws first. In contrast, you should always pre-drill a hole that is 1 mm smaller in the piece you are screwing into. This ensures that the thread will grip well.

Safety Tips for Drilling

1 - Create a list of steps you need to take to complete your woodworking project. It's good to write them down on a paper if you frequently drill wood holes.

2 - Always have required tools and materials you need nearby where you will drill.

3 - Keep you project area organized and free of clutter.

4 - Wear safety goggles, closed-toe-shoes, and snugly-fitting clothing to prevent your sleeves from getting caught up in your work.

5 - Do not work on a project if you are tired, frustrated, or have been consuming alcohol.

6 - Keep kids away from the working area to avoid any accidents.

Wooden drilling requires a tool to make holes and are available in the market with different names. They are often called, "Drill Bits", "Twist Drill Bits", "Bits" or Wooden Drill Bits. These bits are used and a with a machine to "force" the bit into or through the wood.

Brace & Bit Drill

This tool is used by carpenters and craftspeople to drill holes by hand.

Hand-Operated Drill

The above-mentioned brace and bit drill is seldom used and has already been replaced by Hand-Operated Drill. This tool is fairly low-cost and easy to use in tight working places.

Battery-Powered Cordless Drill Driver

These battery-powered machines are used to drive in wood screws and for wood drilling to create holes.

Drill Press

The drill press sits on a workbench and larger models can sit on the floor. A steel column connects the base to the top of the press where the motor powering the chuck which holds the bit is located. There is a geared mechanism that the operator can use to lower or raise the bit with a lever. You can drill holes exactly straight or at preset angles. By using a fence and stop block, you can repeatedly drill a hole in exactly the same location.
